I had the same heart condition as the Pharisees. In John 5:39-40 Jesus rebukes them for being so busy studying and enforcing the Scriptures that they had overlooked the essential thing: Him! Despite all their knowledge about God, they’d missed the main point of studying the Scriptures: intimacy with God.

Reading and studying His Word is necessary so that disciples can learn about God and follow where the Holy Spirit leads. We can then go, proclaim, and teach. But sitting and meditating on Scripture is for the children of God who simply want a hug from their Father.

Those of us who live in a first-world country with religious rights and instant access to the Bible through numerous websites and apps do not perish because we don’t have access to His Word. I suggest we perish because we lack intimacy with the God of the Word. We don’t need more information about God but intimacy with God. To transform anything, including our pain, we must read and meditate on the Word of God, learning to come to Him like children and to simply be. It’s good practice to be still and know (Psalm 46:10) before we go and do.
